Why First English was started.

First English가 시작된 이유.

I decided to start First English after having worked several years in Korea’s extremely stressful and competitive hagwon industry. During that time I realized that Korea’s English hagwon industry is actually more of a business industry than it is an education industry. Because of that I experienced many exhausting and frustrating years as a teacher. Those experiences ultimately are what led me to want to start First English - a non-stressful environment where students can learn English in a fun yet effective way.

저는 엄청난 스트레스와 경쟁이 치열한 한국의 학원계에서 수년간 일한 후에 First English를 시작하기로 결정했습니다. 영어학원에서 일하는 동안 한국의 영어 학원 산업은 교육 보다는 실제로 비즈니스에 더욱 가깝다는 것을 느꼈습니다. 그렇기 때문에 영어선생님인 저에게 있어 학원에서의 경험은 스스로도 좌절스럽고 피곤하였습니다. 이러한 경험을 통해 First English를 시작하게 되었습니다. First English은 학생들이 영어를 재미있고 효과적으로 배울 수 있는 스트레스 없는 환경입니다.

Small Class Size: Many academies have large classes of 8-16 students in a class. Large classes have the problems of having students at different levels of ability, and sometimes there are misbehavior problems. From my experience, a maximum of 4 students is the ideal number of students to have in a class. Each student can receive lots of individual attention and have many opportunities to practice speaking. Four is also better than only 1 or 2 students, because kids enjoy learning with other kids. Games are more fun and the kids always laugh more.

Flexibility: Academies often have rigid and tight schedules that all teachers need to follow. When working at academies I often felt the pressure to finish lessons on time, which meant unfortunately I didn't have the time to correct student mistakes and slower students would often fall behind. At First English, I have the flexibility to spend more time on difficult topics, correct everyone's mistakes, and make sure all the students understand.

Carefully Selected Teaching Materials: Many academies try to use too many books and sometimes even the quality of some of the materials is not that good. At First English I do not have to use books published by any specific company or academy. I have spent many hours comparing books and I use the best books from many different companies.

Excellent Pronunciation: Good pronunciation is very important in my opinion. Speaking with correct grammar is great, but if nobody can understand you, what's the point? Learning good pronunciation is not easy. Many Korean teachers have difficulty teaching pronunciation and many native teachers either do not care or do not have time to focus on pronunciation. At First English, I will help your child acquire excellent standard American pronunciation.

A Caring and Highly Qualified Teacher You Can Trust: There are great teachers and there are also not-so-great teachers. Unfortunately I have seen and worked with many of the latter. Even personally, when I was young I used to like math and I was good at it. However, when I was in high school I had a very scary and mean math teacher who all the students were afraid of. After one year of math with her, I stopped liking math. I promised myself that I would never be a teacher like that. I have always liked children and people who know me well often think I’m like a big kid. I have taught kids for many years now in different capacities (e.g. summer camp, tennis, and English). I am also a father to a 6 year old boy, so I know how important your child is to you. At First English, you can rest assured that I will take care of your child like he/she is my own child.

소규모 학급: 많은 학원들은 한 반에 8-16학생들의 큰 수업을 가지고 있습니다. 큰 학급은 학생들의 능력 수준이 달라 문제가 있고, 때로는 잘못된 행동 문제도 있습니다. 제 경험상 한 반에 최대 4명까지가 이상적인 학생 수입니다. 각 학생은 개별적으로 많은 관심을 받을 수 있고 스피킹 연습을 할 수 있는 많은 기회를 가질 수 있습니다. 또한 아이들은 다른 아이들과 함께 배우는 것을 즐기기 때문에 4명이 한 명이나 두 명보다 낫습니다. 게임들이 더 재미있고 아이들은 항상 더 많이 웃습니다.

유연성: 학원들은 종종 모든 선생님들이 따라야 할 경직되고 빡빡한 일정을 가지고 있습니다. 학원에서 일할 때, 저는 종종 제시간에 수업을 끝내야 한다는 압박을 느꼈고, 그것은 안타깝게도 제가 학생들의 실수를 바로잡을 시간이 없었고 느린 학생들은 종종 뒤처지게 되었습니다. First English에서는 어려운 주제에 더 많은 시간을 할애하고, 모든 아이의 실수를 바로잡고, 모든 학생들이 이해하도록 할 수 있는 유연성이 있습니다.

신중하게 선택된 교재: 많은 학원들이 너무 많은 책을 사용하려고 하고 심지어 일부 자료의 질도 그렇게 좋지 않습니다. First English에서는 특정 회사나 학원에서 출판된 책을 사용할 필요가 없습니다. 저는 책을 비교하는 데 많은 시간을 보냈고 여러 회사의 좋은 책을 사용하고 있습니다.

우수한 발음: 좋은 발음은 제 생각에 매우 중요합니다. 올바른 문법으로 말하는 것은 좋지만 아무도 당신을 이해하지 못한다면 무슨 소용이 있겠습니까? 좋은 발음을 배우는 것은 쉽지 않습니다. 많은 한국인 선생님들은 발음을 가르치는것이 어려울 수 있고 많은 원어민 선생님들은 발음에 신경 쓰지 못하거나 집중할 시간이 없습니다. First English에서는 당신의 자녀가 뛰어난 표준 미국 발음을 습득할 수 있도록 도와드리겠습니다.

신뢰할 수있는 친절하며 자격을 갖춘 교사: 훌륭한 선생님들이 있고 그렇지 않은 선생님들도 있습니다. 불행하게도 저는 선생님으로서 자격이 되지않는 사람들도 있다는걸 알게되었습니다. 개인적으로도 저는 어렸을 때는 수학을 좋아했고 수학을 잘했습니다. 하지만 고등학교 때 모든 학생들이 두려워하는 매우 무섭고 못된 수학 선생님이 있었습니다. 그녀와 1년 동안 수학을 한 후, 저는 수학을 좋아하지 않게 되었습니다. 저는 절대 그런 선생님이 되지 않겠다고 다짐했습니다. 저는 항상 아이들을 좋아하고 저를 잘 아는 사람들은 제가 종종 아이와 같이 생각한다고 말합니다. 저는 지금까지 다양한 역할로(예: 여름 캠프, 테니스, 영어) 아이들을 가르쳐 왔습니다. 또한 저는 6살 남자아이의 아빠이기 때문에 당신에게 자녀가 얼마나 중요한지 알고 있습니다. First English에서는 제 아이처럼 당신의 아이를 돌볼 테니 안심하셔도 됩니다.
